Course Outline

Module 1: Managing the Transport Pipeline In this module, you will gain insight into the various transport components of Exchange, understand how message routing operates, and learn to configure message flow for your organisation. You will review the tasks required of messaging administrators to set up message transport, explore message transport options, and learn how to configure domains and connectors, as well as implement an approval workflow for messaging. Additionally, you will discover how to manage transport rules, a powerful configuration tool for controlling message flow within your organisation.

Module 2: Managing and Troubleshooting Mail Flow This module delves into the components of mail flow and teaches you how to manage it, a critical responsibility for every Exchange administrator. You will compare managing mail flow in Exchange Online, Exchange Server, and Exchange Hybrid deployments. Moving from management to troubleshooting, you will address issues such as emails not being routed correctly internally or externally, or failures in establishing secure connections. You will explore the tools Microsoft provides to help identify the root cause of these issues and resolve them. The module then shifts focus to troubleshooting transport issues, including network-based problems, connector and agent issues, and architectural concerns, along with troubleshooting in coexistence scenarios. Finally, you will learn how to review event, protocol, and tracking logs when standard troubleshooting for service availability and message transport fails, or when historical data regarding past issues is required.

Module 3: Managing Message Hygiene In this module, you will learn about the features and functionality of Microsoft Exchange Online Protection (EOP). You will also learn how to plan messaging routing for this service, which offers anti-malware and anti-spam policies to protect your organisation against spam and malware, while safeguarding it from messaging-policy violations. You will review the anti-malware and anti-spam protection provided by Exchange Server and Online Protection, and learn how to configure SPAM and malware filters, policies, and settings to protect your users. The module concludes by examining Advanced Threat Protection (ATP) and how it extends EOP protection by filtering targeted attacks that might bypass EOP’s defences, including advanced threats like zero-day attacks in email attachments and Office documents, as well as time-of-click protection against malicious URLs. You will learn how Microsoft 365 ATP protects users through features such as safe attachments and safe links, and how it generates reports that give administrators insight into attacks targeting their tenants via email.

Module 4: Managing Compliance This module begins by describing the various compliance features in the Security & Compliance Center (SCC) that messaging administrators can utilise to meet legal and regulatory requirements. It supports compliance in Exchange by examining the features available in the Exchange Admin Center for Exchange Server and hybrid deployments. Given the complex retention requirements of modern messaging environments, this module focuses on archiving methods with Exchange to help you provide an efficient and compliant environment for your users. You will also explore how additional archive storage is provided, how messages are automatically processed and archived, and how audit logging in Exchange provides information about administrator, delegate, and user actions within user mailboxes and your Exchange organisation. Finally, since organisations must adhere to legal discovery requirements (related to organisational policy, compliance, or litigation), you will examine how eDiscovery for Microsoft Exchange assists in performing discovery searches for relevant content within mailboxes.

Module 5: Managing Organisational Settings This module starts by examining how to manage authentication for messaging. It focuses on ensuring user accounts are well-protected and secure, and on deploying multiple security features without introducing unnecessary complexity that could hinder users’ daily work, potentially reducing business productivity or creating new security risks. You will then move from messaging authentication to organisational settings, learning how to configure settings that apply to the entire organisation or to numerous users. Finally, you will examine how to configure organisational sharing.

Module 6: Managing Mobile Devices In this module, you will begin by examining Mobile Device Management in Microsoft 365, as well as how Exchange ActiveSync and mobile device mailbox policies support this initiative. You will then look at how to manage and troubleshoot mobile device access. The module further explores configuring both access and infrastructure for mobile devices, understanding the implications of remote wiping on mobile devices, and learning about alternative methods for mobile device management.

Module 7: Managing Role-Based Permissions This module examines how messaging administrators manage role-based permissions, an essential task for any messaging administrator. Since both Exchange Server and Exchange Online utilise the Role-Based Access Control (RBAC) permission model, this module explores the fundamentals of RBAC management. It concludes by examining how a messaging administrator must carefully plan and configure permissions to avoid risking their environment or the entire Active Directory.

Module 8: Managing Recipient Objects and Resources This module looks at some of the most common tasks performed by messaging administrators: creating and configuring email recipients, lists, and resources. It examines the different types of Exchange Server recipients and how they differ. The module then focuses on the various tasks that require you to create and manage Exchange recipients in Exchange, including user mailboxes, resource mailboxes, shared mailboxes, mail contacts, and mail users. You will also learn how to manage permissions for recipients and how to create and manage groups.

Module 9: Managing Public Folders In this module, you will learn about public folders in Exchange, review planning considerations for deploying public folders, and discuss alternatives to public folders. You will also learn how to implement and manage public folder mailboxes, public folders, and public folder permissions, as well as how to create and manage mail-enabled public folders. The module concludes by examining how to monitor and troubleshoot Public Folder-related issues.

Module 10: Planning a Hybrid Environment In this module, you will examine the requirements necessary to implement a hybrid deployment and learn about the features and components needed during implementation. This module covers all planning aspects required before running the Hybrid Configuration Wizard, including HCW configuration options, as well as details on Organization Configuration Transfer (OCT) and the Hybrid Agent. The module concludes with a review of mail flow options for a hybrid deployment.

Module 11: Performing Mailbox Migrations This module explores the options available for migrating email to Exchange Online, such as performing a migration or using FastTrack to move mailboxes from your existing mail servers to Exchange Online. It summarises migration and coexistence options and recommends when to use each. The module then details the requirements for running an IMAP migration, available migration options, and the steps involved. It also covers planning and executing both cutover and staged migrations, comparing these approaches and outlining the requirements, planning activities, and migration process for each. The module concludes by examining important additional migration tasks, such as migrating PST files and considerations for Public Folder migration.

Module 12: Deploying and Troubleshooting a Hybrid Environment In this module, you will learn the key areas to plan for regarding Edge Transport servers. You will then understand the requirements and best practices for configuring a hybrid deployment, which is the initial step for your Exchange organisation, whether you intend to connect your on-premises Exchange and Exchange Online organisations for long-term coexistence or as part of a cloud migration strategy. You will then examine how to manage a hybrid deployment and implement advanced hybrid functionality. You will cover features that depend on a successful hybrid deployment, such as Public Folder coexistence and OneDrive for Business attachment storage for on-premises mailboxes. The module concludes with an introduction to troubleshooting techniques for a hybrid deployment. You will learn how to troubleshoot directory synchronization issues, including pass-through authentication (PTA) and single sign-on, Exchange transport, client access issues, and mailbox replication service troubleshooting.
