Course Outline

Module 1: Understanding and Installing Internet Information Services

In this module, learners will explore the infrastructure prerequisites necessary for utilizing Microsoft Internet Information Services (IIS) 8.5. Students will also gain insight into the high-level architecture of IIS and acquire the ability to perform a basic installation and configuration of the service.

Module 2: Configuring The Default Website

During this module, learners will master the planning and implementation of network requirements for a public-facing website. Students will configure Domain Name Service (DNS) records to facilitate access to both internal and public websites, and will create virtual directories and application folders to host additional website content.

  • Create folders, virtual directories, and applications that can contain additional website content.

Module 3: Configuring and Managing Application Pools

In this module, learners will understand the advantages of the application pool architecture. Students will create and configure application pools to support additional applications, as well as configure application pool recycle settings. Furthermore, students will perform recycle events and examine the event logs associated with these activities.

Module 4: Creating Additional Websites

Through this module, learners will discover how to examine and create new websites utilizing unique bindings to prevent naming conflicts. Students will analyse existing sites to identify and resolve binding conflicts, and subsequently create new websites employing unique bindings.

Module 5: Configuring Website and Web Application Support

In this module, learners will acquire the skills to support additional application requirements, including common configuration settings, platform support provided by the built-in web server, and the inclusion of further application support via the Web Platform Installer.

Module 6: Securing Websites and Applications

This module teaches learners how to secure internal and public websites for specific users and groups by utilising the built-in Windows and Basic authentication methods. Students will configure file system permissions for designated users and groups and secure a website using URL Authorization Rules.

Module 7: Securing Website Data Transmission

In this module, learners will protect customer data by configuring websites for SSL. Students will install and configure PKI certificates on a web server, establish secured bindings, and verify that data transmissions from the website are secured.

Module 8: Managing Certificates in the Centralized Certificate Store

During this module, learners will install and configure the IIS 8.5 Central Certificate Store to enable centralized and enhanced certificate management. Students will configure a website to utilize a secured binding with the Central Certificate Store.

Module 10: Implementing FTP

This module teaches learners how to configure a secured FTP site that allows users to store and retrieve files. Students will configure authentication, authorization, and the FTP storage location. Additionally, students will retrieve files using the native Windows FTP command.

In this module, learners will acquire the ability to monitor IIS log files and performance counters using Log Parser and PerfMon. Students will identify common issues related to performance and attacks recorded in the log files.

Module 13: Building Load-Balanced Web Farms

In this module, learners will discover how to enhance the reliability and performance of websites by creating a web farm. Students will improve the management and update capabilities of the websites by utilising shared content across both network shares and DFS-R. Additionally, students will enhance web server and website management by employing Shared Configurations.
